The idea
A day, kept by its small meals.
“Elevenses” has always meant a small, proper pause in the late morning — a cup of something warm and a bite of something buttery, taken somewhere between breakfast and lunch.
We keep a clock for it. Around the face runs the whole cozy day — breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, supper — and the hand rests, of course, on eleven. It’s a storybook way to keep time, and an honest one: we bake in small batches, all morning, from scratch.
